Description
'63 The Music Man -- Robert Preston / Shirley Jones This is a rare 16mm IB TECHNICOLOR - CINEMASCOPE / sound film print of the great 1963 musical "The Music Man" starring Robert Preston and Shirley Jones. This title turns up in IB from time to time, but most of the prints seem to be flat or letterbox. Here's a synopsis from AMG: " Meredith Wilson's hit 1957 Broadway musical was transferred to the screen in larger-than-life fashion in 1962. Robert Preston repeats his legendary stage performance as fast-talking con man Harold Hill, who goes from town to town selling citizens on starting a "boy's band," then extracts money from them by ordering instruments and uniforms, with the promise that he'll teach the kids how to be musicians. Once he's collected his bankroll, Hill skips town, leaving the kids in the lurch. Looking for new suckers in Iowa, Hill arrives in River City, where he declares that the only way to save the youth of River City from the lure of the poolroom is to organize a boy's band. He charms the mayor's wife Eulalie (Hermione Gingold) into forming a "ladies' dance committee" and sets his sights on winning over local music teacher Marian Paroo (Shirley Jones). Marian rightly considers Hill a fraud, especially when he espouses the "Think System" of learning music: if you think a tune, he claims, you can play it. But Marian becomes Hill's staunchest ally when her young brother Winthrop (Ronny Howard), sullen and withdrawn since the death of his father, exuberantly comes out of his shell at the prospect of joining Hill's band; and Marian's budding romance with the charming but unreliable Hill ultimately brings her out of her own shell as well. Marion Hargrove's script uses most of the original play, with a handful of amusing expansions, especially in the roles played by Gingold and by Buddy Hackett as Hill's comic sidekick. This is a CINEMASCOPE print - you will need an anamorphic lens for the full widescreen effect. Note: Pictures Below this line are from the actual print. These two pictures of the same shot (without and with the anamorphic lens) - see notes in the condition section for information about this shot. Print Condition : Physical Condition: Print is in good to very good condition. Wear wise about 2/3 of the print is very good with just light surface wear. The other 1/3 of the print (scattered sections) has some white lines (see the pictures for some examples). The print has a few short sections of adapted and flat replacement footage (all IB). The last two pictures above show what the adapted footage looks like when projected w/o a scope lens, and with one. Reel 1 has three sections of adapted footage, total of 1 minute Reel 2 has two sections of adapted footage, total of 50 seconds Reel 3 has one section of adapted footage, total of 15 seconds Reel 4 has twelve sections (8 of them are in the first 5 minutes) of adapted footage totaling 4 minutes and 30 seconds. Reel 4 also has a 2 min 15 sec section of flat footage, plus another 22 seconds of flat footage in the credits. The print has scattered splices througout with some of them clipping some dialog. A few spots get splicy and there's 4 or 5 short jumps that appear to cross scenes (I'm not sure about the exact amount of footage missing, but I'd guess that at most a couple minutes total). The jumps and splicy sections I believe are where the reel changes originally were (the print has been remounted, so these sections appear now in the middle of reels). The end titles cut out a few seconds early (we see Shirley Jones and Robert Preston's credits (which are the last ones), and then we see them walking together down the street, and it cuts shortly after that) Color: stunning IB Technicolor except for the first 90 seconds of the titles which are LPP. Vinegar Syndrome: No sign of vinegar . Notes on Color: Color ratings are generally subjective. Here are the ratings I use: · IB Technicolor/Kodachrome – These are dye transfer processes that should never fade · Lowfade – this print is on a stock that will not fade for a long time · Excellent color – print that is not on a low fade stock but shows no signs of fading · Very Good color – print that has a slight shift, but retains most of its color. It may have a slight redish/pinkish/brownish cast to it, but has strong color. · Good Color – has a noticeable shift, but still maintains much of it’s color. Also knows as ‘Warm’ · Fair color – Has shifted substantially to Red/Pink but still has blues and greens in it. · Pink/Red – Print has turned mainly to pink or red, there may be some greens and blues left, but not much.
