The first 1982 Gala revived a spark that had been fired by George Harrison's Concert for Bangladesh in 1971, and turned it into a blazing modern tradition. This tradition reached its peak with the Live Aid Concerts to help relieve the Ethiopian famine of 1985. By 1987, the Prince's Trust and its musical director, Midge Ure, had set a glorious precedent.
