TREASURES FROM THE SCOTTISH FILM AND TELEVISION ARCHIVE AT SCOTTISH SCREEN THE RUGGED ISLAND 1934 A SHETLAND LYRIC ERISKAY 1935 A POEM OF REMOTE LIVES "The Rugged Island - a Shetland Lyric 1934 Directed and photographed by Jenny Brown Cast: Enga Stout - John Gilbertson and other Shetland crofters "A Documentary Story" Andrew and Enga, a young crofting couple in the Shetland Isles face the conflicting ties of home and the tempting promise of a new life through emigration. The film was made by Jenny Gilbertson (nee Brown), the pioneering film-maker who began chronicling life in Shetland in 1931. This film has been preserved with the support and encouragement of the Post Office in the centenary year of the birth of John Grierson who founded the GPO Film Unit Running Time Approx 42 Mins BLACK & WHITE Eriskay - a Poem of Remote Lives 1935 Directed and photographed by Dr Werner Kissling Kissling's evocative film of the lives of the people of the Hebridean island of Eriskay recorded during the summer of 1934. Made by the German aristocrat as a silent film the English narrative and haunting traditional airs sung by the London Gaelic Choir were added to the film for its release in 1935.
