Includes "Female," "Blessed Event," "Ladies They Talk About," "Three on a Match," "Skyscraper Souls" and "Employee's Entrance." Blessed Event 1932 / 78 Minutes / Black & White Not Rated A keyhole-peeping columnist whose zest for unearthing short marriage-to-maternity spans among Broadway's notables brings him success in the tabloids. He thinks no one is exempt from his poison pen, but some sinister types intend to prove him dead wrong. Film debut for actor Dick Powell. Based on a play by Manuel Seff and Forrest Wilson. Cast: Lee Tracy Dick Powell Mary Brian Allen Jenkins Ruth Donnelly Crew: Director Roy Del Ruth Screenwriter Howard J. Green Skyscraper Souls 1932 / 99 Minutes / Black & White Not Rated Description: A ruthless financial wiz plans to build a huge monument to his ego, despite the fluctuating stock market and financial instability of his employees. Cast: Warren William Maureen O'Sullivan Gregory Ratoff Anita Page Verree Teasdale Crew: Director Edgar Selwyn Story by Faith Baldwin & C. Gardner Sullivan Three on a Match 1932 / 65 Minutes / Black & White Not Rated Description: After 10 years apart, three childhood schoolmates unexpectedly bump into each other and immediately resume their friendship in spite of their very different positions in society. While reminiscing, they light three cigarettes from the same match, defying a popular 1930s superstition that this will result in death for one of them. Joan Blondell plays Mary Keaton, a former delinquent who has become an actress; Bette Davis plays the sharp-witted Ruth Westcott, who works as a stenographer; and Ann Dvorak plays wife and mother Vivian Revere. In a sharply paced production, the lives of all three are turned on their heads. Vivian longs to rid herself of her unhappy marriage, and when Mary introduces her to Mike Loftus (Lyle Talbot), Mary thinks she's found the new exciting life she's seeking. But Mike is an unsavory and debt-ridden gambler who concocts a scheme involving blackmail, kidnapping, and violence. On top of the extensive plot, director Mervyn LeRoy (I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG, LITTLE CAESAR) manages to eulogize the entire roaring '20s in just over an hour while making film history by casting Humphrey Bogart in his first role as a gangster. Cast: Bette Davis Joan Blondell Ann Dvorak Warren William Humphrey Bogart Crew: Director Mervyn LeRoy Producer Samuel Bischoff Employee's Entrance 1933 / 75 Minutes / Black & White Not Rated Details: A penniless young woman is forced to take a job with a reptilian executive who is in charge of a large department store. When she falls in love with his apprentice, their jobs are threatened. A racy movie for its time, based on a play by David Boehm. Cast: Warren William Loretta Young Wallace Ford Alice White Allen Jenkins Crew: Director Roy Del Ruth Female 1933 / 60 Minutes / Black & White Not Rated Description: In Michael Curtiz's romantic comedy FEMALE, Ruth Chatterton plays Alison Drake, the iron-fisted president of a motorcar company. Alison oversees the daily operations of her male employees with a predatory gaze and frequently exercises her right to engage with them in any way she deems fit. She meets her match in an equally strong-minded new employee, Jim Thorne (George Brent), and the two engage in a smoldering, contentious, sexually charged duel. The action of the film--one of the first to depict a female character turning a man's world to her advantage--feeds on the novelty of presenting a woman as a corporate shark and bedroom hound. Though it's obvious the filmmakers thought they were creating a scenario that would never actually happen, Alison's world-smashing exploits make the bulk of the film (before she begins to question her nontraditional lifestyle) a protofeminist romp. Brent and Chatterton were married at the time they made the film, and the natural chemistry between them is abundantly evident. Curtiz (THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE) packs the screen with extravagant set design and period detail. Cast: Ruth Chatterton George Brent Ferdinand Gottschalk Philip Faversham Ruth Donnelly Crew: Director Michael Curtiz Screenwriters Gene Markey, Kathryn Scola & William A. Wellman Composer Leo F. Forbstein Ladies They Talk About 1933 / 70 Minutes / Black & White Not Rated Description: When police take in robbery accomplice Nan Taylor for booking, she attracts the sympathy of former classmate and evangelist David Slade. Though Slade preaches law-and-order politics over the radio, he comes to the woman's defense and persuades the judge not to put her behind bars. After Nan is released into Slade's custody, she reveals her participation in the crime -- and he blows the whistle, sending Nan up the river. In the joint, Nan will not meet with Slade when he pays her visits. Then she hears word that two other members of her gang have been locked up, and she finally agrees to see Slade, so she can use the preacher to hatch an escape plan for her cohorts and for herself.
